Technical SEO Audit: Which Fixes Come First?

In a technical SEO audit, fix indexing problems first, then site structure, duplicate content, page experience, structured data and redirects, in that order. Put any website through an SEO crawler and the report will list hundreds or even thousands of warnings, from missing alt text and long titles to redirect chains and duplicate meta descriptions. Spotting issues is easy. The skill lies in knowing which of them hold the site back and which you can leave alone.
This guide covers the technical areas in order of importance: making sure Google can find and index your key pages, then helping it understand them, then making them quick and trustworthy. Follow this order and you will deal with the problems that cost traffic before the ones that only look messy.
1. Can Google crawl and index your key pages?
If your key pages are missing from Google's index, no other fix will help. Open the Page indexing report in Google Search Console and confirm that your most valuable pages, such as service pages, product categories and leading articles, are indexed.
- Review robots.txt for rules that block important sections by mistake.
- Search for leftover noindex tags, which often remain after a launch or redesign.
- Check that your XML sitemap lists only live, indexable pages and has been submitted in Search Console.
- Make sure canonical tags point to the version of each page you want to rank.
2. Is your site structure helping or hurting?
Your site structure helps when important pages are well linked and hurts when they are buried, because search engines partly judge a page's importance by its links. Pages five or six clicks from the homepage, or pages with no internal links, are usually crawled less and rank lower.
- Keep key pages no more than three clicks from the homepage.
- Track down orphan pages, which have no internal links pointing at them, and link to them from related pages.
- Write descriptive anchor text for internal links instead of phrases like 'click here'.
- On ecommerce sites, control faceted navigation and filter URLs so they do not generate thousands of near-duplicate pages.
3. Are duplicate or thin pages competing with each other?
Duplicate and thin pages compete with each other when several of them cover one topic, and none ranks as well as a single strong page would. Find pages aimed at the same keyword, location or product pages that are almost identical, and short pages that add little. Merge them with redirects, combine the best content into one page, or give each page its own clear purpose.
4. Do your pages pass Core Web Vitals?
Your pages pass Core Web Vitals when they hit a good score on three measures of speed and stability, which affect both rankings and conversions:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the main content appears. The target is 2.5 seconds or under.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how fast the page reacts to a click or tap. The target is 200 milliseconds or under.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the layout moves while loading. The target is 0.1 or under.
Rely on field data in Search Console, which reflects real visitors, and treat lab tests as a supplement. The usual causes are oversized images, heavy third-party scripts, unoptimised web fonts and elements that load without space set aside for them.
5. Is your structured data correct?
Your structured data is correct when it matches what is visible on the page and passes validation. Schema helps search engines understand whether a page describes an organisation, a product, an article or a set of FAQs, and can qualify pages for richer results. Add the schema types that fit the page, test them with Google's Rich Results Test, and never mark up content that visitors cannot see.
6. Are redirects, status codes and links in good shape?
- Update internal links that lead to 404 pages or to redirects so they point straight at the final URL.
- Collapse redirect chains into a single redirect wherever you can.
- Point pages that have moved permanently to their new home with a 301 redirect.
- After a redesign or migration, confirm that every old URL with traffic or backlinks redirects to its nearest equivalent.
How should you prioritise your fixes?
Prioritise fixes by scoring each issue on two things: how much traffic or revenue it touches and how much work it takes to fix. Begin with high-impact, low-effort fixes on the pages that matter most to the business. An indexing fault on a key service page is worth more than a thousand missing alt tags on old blog posts.
Next, fix problems at template level wherever possible. Correcting an issue in the product page template resolves it on every product together, which is far quicker than editing pages one at a time.
